Picture this: you are now thinking of how you’d like to feel instead of how you are feeling right now. Maybe you’d like to be soaking up the sun at the beach, or maybe traveling to a distant country. Maybe, like me, you are imagining that embroidery project you wish you were doing, but are not. Because you don’t have time, or space, lack the supplies or the skills to do it.
My experience is this: the biggest obstacle to not being where you wish you were – be it that city you always wished to visit, learning that foreign language you wished you knew, or finishing that embroidery project you wished to conclude – is not starting. I’ll say it again: not starting is the biggest, tallest hurdle we need to overcome to get to our objective, whatever that is.
Sure, there are many obstacles along the way, but not starting is the biggest, because it pins you down to where you are right now, welding your feet solid to the ground. And the longer you wait, the harder it gets.
It sounds simple, and it is: starting is the most important step towards accomplishing your goals. Sure, then you have to keep going, but I have found that once you are going and start to see the results, you generate enough momentum to keep you going.
Think of a supermarket cart: when you are still and want to start moving around, pushing it in front of you, you have to give it an extra push. As soon as it is moving, you don’t need to push as hard, you just need to steer it.
Embroidery, like so many things that are good for us, is very much like that: you think it is hard, you don’t have time, you don’t have the supplies at home, you don’t have the skills. In short, you don’t start.
But it doesn’t have to be like this. You can start, because it’s not hard, you can make the time for it, maybe you don’t have all the supplies, but I’m sure you have some (and the others are easy to get).
As for the skills, I have great news! Drumroll please…

Imagine só: em vez de estar onde está, estava na praia, a apanhar sol. Ou então a visitar aquela cidade que há muito deseja conhecer. Ou, se for como eu, a imaginar aquele projecto de bordado que tanto deseja fazer, mas ainda não fez. Porque não tem tempo, falta-lhe espaço, não tem os materiais e o que sabe de bordado não chega.
A minha experiência é que o maior obstáculo que se coloca entre o ponto onde estamos e aquele em que gostaríamos de estar é, simplesmente, não começar. Imagine que gostaria de aprender uma língua estrangeira nova, ou visitar aquele país exótico. O maior obstáculo é não começar a viagem que lhe permite lá chegar, um passo de cada vez. Vou repetir: o maior obstáculo a alcançar os seus objectivos é não começar.
Claro que há sempre muitos obstáculos no caminho, mas nenhum deles é tão impeditivo do sucesso como o primeiro e maior deles, que é nem sequer começar. Porque não começar significa soldar os pés ao ponto em que estamos, e com os pés presos qualquer obstáculo se torna intransponível. Quanto mais espera para começar, mais difícil se torna.
Parece simples, e é: começar, dar o primeiro passo, encetar caminho é a etapa mais importante para atingir os nossos objectivos, sejam eles quais forem. Uma vez que estamos em movimento e se começam a ver os resultados, torna-se mais fácil continuar. É como quando estamos no supermercado e temos de empurrar o carrinho: para iniciar o movimento, temos de imprimir mais força; uma vez que já está em movimento, basta-nos continuar.
O bordado, tal como tantas outras coisas que nos fazem bem, também é assim: parece complicado, demorar demasiado tempo, requerer materiais difíceis de encontrar, talvez, quem sabe, noutro dia? Resumindo, acabamos por nunca começar.
Mas não tem de ser assim. Pode começar a bordar, porque não é complicado e vai conseguir encontrar tempo na sua agenda. Talvez não tenha todos os materiais, mas agulhas não hão-de ser difíceis de encontrar. Quanto às suas capacidades? Aos seus conhecimentos de bordado? Quanto a isso tenho novidades…
(Entra o rufar dos tambores…)
