One of my favorite aspects of working on a creative project is collaboration. In Portuguese, we say that two heads think better than one. And I believe that is absolutely true when it comes to creativity.

Many people believe that artistic work demands a troubled, lonely time; but that is not my experience at all. I love how my work depends so much on collaboration: all the parties come together to make the final result a lot better than if it were made by just one of the teams.

Last year, I received a commission that perfectly illustrates this. My client and friend Laura approached me with a very special commission: she wanted to give a special wedding present for a special friend, one that had a bit of each of the members of her family, dedicated to the bride.

So she came up with the idea of embroidering handwritten messages on a tablecloth, and from then on, we started working on it together.

First, each of the four gift-givers wrote their messages on their own handwriting on paper. I enlarged the text and printed it out; cut out each of the words and then, with Laura’s help, positioned them on the tablecloth, secured with pins.

I suggested four colors that would represent each of them, and an extra one for a special, hidden message.

Then I transferred each word to the fabric, so that I could get rid of the pins – I lost count to how many times I got stabbed by them!

Embroidery is one of those activities that almost immediately take me into a meditative state where I completely relax and am, at the same time, completely focused on the task at hand. Stitch by stitch, words became written in floss and the tablecloth took shape.

During the whole time, I kept sending Laura updates, either in photographs or short emails. Anticipation grew and I simply couldn’t wait to finish this project and show it to Laura!

As soon as I finished embroidering, I washed and ironed the cloth and took as many pictures as possible. Laura wasn’t in town at the time, so I mailed it to her and had to wait, as patiently as I could manage (ahem), to wait for her feedback.

I was later told that both the givers and the recipients loved the present, and I couldn’t have been happier.

The joy of working on a project is mostly about the story the client and I create: what is the message I want to send? How can I do it? Who and what will help me achieve that?

Thinking together about these questions and their answers is the key to a successful collaboration. This was a lovely project to work on and I’m looking forward to many more!

Um dos aspectos de que mais gosto quando trabalho em projectos criativos é a colaboração. O ditado duas cabeças pensam melhor que uma aplica-se, a meu ver, na perfeição.

Há quem pense que o trabalho artístico requer solidão, mas essa não é a minha experiência. Adoro quando surge um novo projecto em que posso colaborar com o cliente e constatar que o resultado final é melhor que o que seria se estivéssemos, cada uma das partes, a trabalhar sozinhas.

No ano passado, recebi uma encomenda que ilustra esta minha convicção: a minha cliente e amiga Laura abordou-me com um pedido muito especial, o de criar um presente de casamento único para oferecer a uma grande amiga. Deu-me a ideia de oferecer uma toalha de mesa bordada com mensagens escritas pela família dela para a noiva. A sugestão foi imediatamente aceite e daí em diante foi uma chuva de ideias.

Cada um dos membros da família escreveu as suas mensagens com a sua caligrafia. Depois de copiar, ampliar e imprimi-las, recortei cada uma das palavras e dispu-las com alfinetes sobre a toalha, testando, em conjunto com a cliente, várias composições.

Escolhemos quatro cores, uma para cada membro da família, e o trabalho do bordado começou. Primeiro, transferi as palavras para a toalha, para me libertar das alfinetadas. E aos poucos as palavras começaram a aparecer, escritas a fio, ponto por ponto. Bordar é uma actividade que rapidamente me transporta para um estado meditativo em que relaxo completamente, ao mesmo tempo em que estou incrivelmente focada no que estou a fazer. Dir-se-ia que é um yoga de agulha e linha!

Durante todo o trabalho, fui enviando actualizações à cliente, ou em fotografia, ou através de pequenas frases. Assim que terminei o trabalho de bordado, lavei a toalha e engomei-a, fotografei-a e meti-a no correio para a enviar para o seu destino. Estava desejosa de que a cliente a visse e tive de conter a minha impaciência até que o embrulho lhe chegou às mãos.

Foi uma alegria saber que todos adorámos o projecto: eu adorei a execução; a cliente e a presenteada, o resultado.

Para mim, a alegria de participar num projecto tem tudo a ver com a história que o cliente e eu criamos: que mensagem queremos enviar? Como fazê-lo? Quem me pode ajudar?

Pensar em conjunto sobre as respostas a estas perguntas é a chave do sucesso das parcerias. Que, na minha opinião, acontecem sempre que alguém pede um trabalho e alguém decide aceitá-lo. Este foi um desses fantásticos projectos que nos deixam com vontade de mais.
